- It was the first protocol approved as an industry standard protocol in 1983.
- It is a Local Area Network (LAN) protocol used on bus and star topologies.
- It is built into the hardware devices or NICs used to transmit and receive.
- Uses a system called Carrier Sense Multiple Access and Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) to deal with collisions when messages are sent at the same time.
- If two nodes attempt to transmit at the same time, a collision occurs.
- This collision is detected by all participating nodes.
- After a random time interval, the node will try to retransmit the message.
- If collisions continue to occur, the time intervals will gradually be increased until the message is successfully transmitted
In short CSMA/CD is:
- Each node listens for a quiet period before transmitting (Carrier Sense).
- If not singal, each node has equal chance to transmit (Multiple Access).
- If two nodes transmit at the same time, they must detect that fact and quit (Collision Detection).
